Fisheries Surveillance at Indonesia’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries

I took a 5-day course on Monitoring, Control and Surveillance for Fisheries Enforcement. We did a study case, and I took a case from Indonesia. The vessel in my study case was suspected for transshipment, illegal fishing, human trafficking and even slavery. It was so memorable, because the vessel still hadn’t been caught.

Next month, our surveillance vessel caught it. We heard the criminal vessel’s crew and victims say they were so happy to be caught by us, because it meant they could go home safely. They said that hearing gun shots didn’t scare them, and instead they felt relief. They always believed that law enforcement would save them.

This course helped me to become more aware of illegal maritime activities, and to be more careful in handling them. What surprised me most was that it boosted my confidence.

Law Enforcement Officer in Indonesia

I am very grateful for the opportunity to participate in training on Monitoring, Control and Surveillance for Fisheries Enforcement. This event has been immensely beneficial in enhancing our skills and knowledge in fisheries surveillance. During the training, we received invaluable insight from Dr. Dyhia Belhabib, an expert in IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated) fishing, investigation and maritime crime.

We learned about IUU fishing vessels, vessel movement detection, and human techniques in gathering criminal information. We also had the opportunity to practice using advanced [detection] technologies. This has significantly helped us understand the strategies used by fishing vessels to evade detection, and how to counter them.
