ABOUT US

Dr. Dyhia Belhabib is an expert trainer for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Her industry-leading experience both in instruction and in the field has seen her train over 60 law enforcement organizations and investigate cases of drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal fishing, and murder. In 2018, Belhabib founded Spyglass.fish, a cooperative platform to detect illegal fishing activities and profile criminals. She holds a PhD in Resource Management and Environmental studies from UBC, and has published over 110 peer-reviewed articles, reports, and book chapters. An accomplished speaker, Belhabib has delivered one TED and three TEDx talks alongside a multitude of keynote speeches to law enforcement, Homeland Security, and national security audiences across nearly 30 countries.

Advocating for better practices

Dr. Belhabib saw a discrepancy between the current static training models and the in-practice situations that call for an active listening approach. The training she had previously been offering was to siloed organizations, and found many would approach her asking for access she could not at the time provide. The Bel Method seeks to democratize this high-level training, led by a unique philosophy that combines the use of technology with a cultural sensitivity lens to profile potential crimes, criminals, informants and victims alike.

The bel method is working in 26 Countries

“You don’t understand the value of profiling until you get stuck in the middle of the bushes of Guinea Bissau negotiating your way out of the grip of a Ghadaffi mercenary.”

We Combat Crime

Technology or human intelligence alone cannot solve human trafficking. Our approach combines both to detect risk early on, investigate, and close cases. With the Bel Method, we explore a multitude of real-life cases from all over the world in order to speak with and extract information from victims with sensitivity. Dr. Belhabib has investigated over 200 cases of forced labor and human trafficking onboard vessels world-wide (South-East Asia, Canada, US, UK, and West Africa). Only in studying real field work can we understand the nuance involved: Dyhia has seen cases where “corruption” bolstered traffickers, and where “corruption” helped victims access phones and call for help.
